About Craft Mode

How many hours have you spent staring at Minecraft's crafting table? Craft Mode turns that muscle memory into a game. The screen shows a 3×3 recipe almost entirely blank — you can see the amount it yields and a single ingredient planted in one cell. From that, you have to guess which item comes off the table.

Reading a recipe is a language of its own, and fluent speakers solve it fast: three iron ingots in a row with two sticks running down the middle draw a pickaxe; eight obsidian blocks ringing a book can only be an enchanting table; seeds and water become something else entirely. The recipe's shape tells more of the story than the name.

Each miss opens up one more cell of the grid, in reading order — left to right, top to bottom. So the recipe's silhouette gradually fills in, and with every new ingredient the range of possible items narrows. The output amount, always visible, is your first big clue: a recipe that yields four is thinking about planks or stairs, not a sword.

There are more than 150 crafting-table recipes in the curation — only the shaped ones, where the pieces sit in fixed spots, leaving smelting and forging out. Guesses are unlimited so you can reason at your own pace, and the day's result becomes an emoji grid ready for the challenge among friends, without revealing the item.

Frequently asked questions

Only crafting-table recipes, or furnace ones too?

Only shaped crafting-table recipes: the pieces sit in fixed positions on the 3×3 grid. Furnace smelting, smithing recipes and shapeless ones stay out, because they have no layout to recognize.

When a recipe uses wood, which type shows up?

The oak variant is the mode's canonical one — it stands in for the recipe's shape. What matters is the layout of the pieces on the grid, not the tree species, so don't waste time guessing the kind of wood.

Why is the output amount shown from the start?

Because it's the cheapest and most revealing clue: items that come out in batches of four (planks, sticks, stairs) form a very different group from those that come out one at a time, like tools and armor. It steers your first guess before the ingredients even appear.
