How to win LOLdle: a Classic Mode strategy guide

Understand what each attribute reveals

In Classic Mode, every guess compares seven attributes against the secret champion: gender, position, species, resource, range type, Runeterra region and release year. A blue square confirms an exact match; amber warns of a partial one (say, one of the positions matches but not all); and transparent rules that trait out.

The trick is to read the seven attributes as a system, not in isolation. A top-lane melee champion who uses mana and hails from Noxus narrows the pool to a handful of names — even before you land a single blue on the right one.

Open with a high-contrast guess

Your first guess shouldn't be the champion you think is the answer — it should be the one that cuts the most possibilities. Prefer a 'mid-table' champion across several axes: a common position (Mid or Jungle), a common resource (mana), a middle-of-the-road year. That way, whatever turns blue or transparent, you eliminate a lot.

Champions like Ahri, Lee Sin or Jarvan IV make good openers precisely because they sit at the center of several attributes. Avoid starting with extreme champions (the oldest one, a rare species), because a transparent result on them tells you little.

Use the year arrow as a compass

The release-year column is the most powerful: beyond blue/transparent, it shows an arrow telling you whether the secret champion is newer (↑) or older (↓) than your guess. Treat it like a binary search: each well-chosen guess halves the range of years.

If your 2016 guess points up and your 2021 guess points down, the answer sits between 2017 and 2020 — and now you combine that with the attributes already revealed to nail the name.

Cross-reference position, resource and range

Once the year band is set, the attributes that narrow the list most are position, resource and range type. A ranged Support who doesn't use mana is a rare profile — few names fit. A melee Jungler with mana, on the other hand, is a big group, so there you lean more on year and region.

Watch for amber on position: it means the secret champion plays more than one lane and one of them matches your guess. That's a strong clue for flexible champions who show up in two or three positions in the meta.

Save region and species for the tiebreak

Runeterra region and species are usually the tiebreaker attributes. Once you've boxed in the year and pinned the position, the region almost always gives the champion away: being left with 'an Ionia Jungler released in 2018' leaves very few options for anyone who knows the lore.

It pays to memorize the big regional clusters — who's from Noxus, Demacia, Shurima, the Void — because region is an attribute casual play forgets, but it's the one that closes the challenge when the numbers alone no longer do.
